शिक्षक दिवस भारत के प्रथम उपराष्टपति 1952-1962 तथा द्वितीय राष्टपति 13मई,1962-13मई,1967 तक रहे डॉ०सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णन के जन्म दिन के अवसर पर मनाया जाता है।डॉ०सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णन का जन्म 5सितम्बर,1888 को तिरूट्टनी,तमिलनाडु में हुआ था।आपकी पत्नी का नाम शिवकामु था।अपने पीछे 1पुत्र तथा 5पुत्रियां आप छोड़ कर गये थे।डॉ सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णन एक प्रखर वक्ता तथा आदर्श शिक्षक थे।भारतीय सभ्यता तथा संस्कृति को अंगीकार किये दार्शनिक स्वभाव के आस्थावान हिन्दू विचारक डॉ सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णन ने 40वर्ष तक शिक्षण कार्य किया।5 सितंबर को शिक्षक दिवस हर साल मनाया जाता है भारत में, देश के दूसरे राष्ट्रपति डा. सर्वपल्ली Radhakrishan के जन्म के रूप में मनाने के लिए. डॉ. सर्वपल्ली Radhakhrishnan एक दार्शनिक और एक महान शिक्षक जिसका भारतीय शिक्षा प्रणाली की ओर योगदान को नकारा नहीं जा सकता है.
शिक्षक दिवस 5 सितंबर, 1962 के बाद से किया गया है भारत में मनाया जाता है. यह पहली बार डॉ. सर्वपल्ली Radhakrishan, जो अपने जन्मदिन मनाना चाहते थे और छात्रों और मित्रों द्वारा अनुरोध पर मनाया गया. डा. सर्वपल्ली Radhakrishan सुझाव दिया है कि छात्रों को अपने जन्मदिन का जश्न मनाने के बजाय, 5 सितंबर के रूप में पालन करना चाहिए
शिक्षक दिवस. तब से भारत भर में शिक्षक दिवस समारोह सभी डॉ. सर्वपल्ली Radhakrishan के जन्मदिन पर आयोजित की जाती हैं.
